A Gold Wing Trike Review / Lonestar Trike Conversion

Revision: 08/25/2008

Introduction:

It took me a year to make up mind to trike my bike. I did some research and found half a dozen trike manufactures that caught my attention. At a glance, most GL1800 trike conversions look the same, but a closer look reveals noticeable differences like the shape of the fiberglass body. I decided to create an Excel spreadsheet to identify the majority of the brands. Trike Spreadsheet

My decision was narrowed to the following:

  • Independent rear axle suspension.
  • No air shocks.
  • Auxiliary fuel tank.
  • Looks (personal preference) all trikes look good.

The installer picked up my Gold Wing from my home.

Tied down and ready for the trip my Gold Wing goes by - by. Check out the mud flap, personal licence plate holder, and the trunk helmet hangers. I never got them back.

The Delivery:

I offer this advice from experience. Remove all accessories from the rear section of the bike because you might not get them back. Do not forget about some of the accessories that are not visible like handle bar risers, or make sure you mention them to the installer. I was so excited to get my bike back, after a two month wait, I did not realize many of the bikes parts were not returned to me.

Items Missing When the trike was delivered:

  • Center Stand
  • Kick Stand
  • Mud Flap
  • Personalized license Plate holder
  • Helmet Hangers
  • Rear crash guards
  • Stock Triple T
  • Guide frame holder  #45163-MCA-000

The Service:

I wish I could convey a positive experience. My brief attempt to request help, for some issues, ended up very unpleasant. The installer insinuated that I caused the problem and instead of offering to provide support I was told to take it to a Honda dealer. I ended up having to figure things out on my own. After several emails, with the installer I realized I was on my own. On several of the emails, with the installer, I included California Side Car because they actually recommended the installer. CSC never replied or commented, but the installer did change his attitude when I mentioned that I would post my trike conversion experience on my web site.

Comments:

I did receive a letter, with a brief apology, and one of the missing items (my personalized license plate holder), but nothing else.

Conclusion:

Find an installer near your home and get several referrals from satisfied customers. I personally feel that all major trike conversion kits are well made and will make a great trike. A bad installer can make your trike conversion a living (expensive) nightmare.

Update:

I had an axle problem that let me stranded with only 9,000 on the kit. CSC Axle Repair
